As a young boy growing up in Colombia, football was and still is the only sport
I have known. I started playing football at the age of 6 and first came to
Australia at the age of 9, experiencing a very different world when
it came to the sport. I returned to Colombia at the age of 11
and played the majority of my youth football here where
I quickly realised the only thing I wanted was
to be a professional footballer.
I returned to Australia at the age of 16 and played for a variety of NPL clubs including
Parramatta Eagles and Marconi Stallions, before fulfilling my dream of playing
professional football in Singapore at the age of 20. 18 months later I returned to
Australia and decided to stay and give it one last shot at playing professional in this
country. By the age of 23 I was starting to realise this was a lot more difficult
than I once thought, for many reasons.
I started coaching at grassroots level shortly after this – I believe so many young coaches start at this level. At the age of 25 I met Head Coach Lee Jones while still coaching
at grassroots level and completing my Bachelor in Sports Business. At the time I didn’t know it but it was the beginning of an amazing story/career with
Joner Football which I feel is literally just getting started, despite being a part of this amazing coaching group for almost 5 years now. Along with
Head Coach Lee and Senior Coach Shane, I have learned and developed so much as a person and as a coach and they have helped me discover
a love for player development and mentoring.
As part of Joner Football, the most important lesson I have learned and developed is to treat and train every single player who steps on the field with us, with the belief that I can help them become a professional footballer. I’m obviously well aware that it is impossible that every player we coach will become a pro, however each player deserves the chance to believe there is someone who wants to help them and guide them to become the best possible footballer they can be and create pathways for this to happen – something I consider is sorely lacking in Australian football.
While playing at Northbridge FC he came into contact with Head Coach Lee Jones, and the opportunity
to come on board as one of the coaches for Joner Football arose. Coach Jules has now been
part of the team for 6 years!
